Oral Cancer

Oral cancer encompasses cancers of the mouth and throat, affecting the tongue, gums, and other areas. It’s most common in those over 40, often linked to tobacco, alcohol use, or HPV. Early detection is crucial for effective treatment.

What Are Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer refers to cancers developing in the mouth and throat, typically affecting areas like the tongue, mouth lining, gums, and throat’s back. It represents about 3% of cancers in the U.S. Risk factors include tobacco and alcohol use, HPV infection, sun exposure, poor nutrition, and genetics. Symptoms might not appear in early stages but can include sores or lumps, white or red patches in the mouth, persistent sore throat, difficulty in chewing or speaking, jaw swelling, mouth pain, numbness, and ear pain. It’s crucial to identify and treat oral cancer early, often through surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy, complemented by targeted or immunotherapy in certain cases. Regular dental checkups and self-awareness of oral health can aid in early detection.
