Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy is a cancer treatment using body-made or lab-created substances to strengthen the immune system, enabling it to detect and eliminate cancer cells. It’s effective against various cancers and can be combined with other treatments.

What is Immunotherapy?

Immunotherapy represents a breakthrough in cancer treatment, leveraging the body’s immune system to fight cancer. Unlike traditional treatments that directly target cancer cells, immunotherapy empowers the immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells more effectively. This approach is based on the understanding that the immune system, comprising cells, organs, and proteins, is naturally capable of combating cancer. However, cancer cells often evade these defenses, necessitating interventions to enhance the immune response.

There are several forms of immunotherapy, each functioning differently. Some stimulate the immune system to slow or stop cancer cell growth, while others enable it to destroy cancer cells or prevent their spread. Types of immunotherapy include monoclonal antibodies, immune checkpoint inhibitors, non-specific immunotherapies, oncolytic virus therapy, T-cell therapy, and cancer vaccines. Each type is tailored to the specific nature of the cancer, considering factors such as cancer type, location, spread, patient’s age, health, and potential side effects. Monoclonal antibodies, for example, can block abnormal proteins in cancer cells or inhibit immune checkpoints that cancer cells exploit. The strategic use of immunotherapy, either alone or in combination with other treatments, marks a significant advancement in personalized cancer care, offering hope for more effective and targeted treatment options.

How Does Immunotherapy Fight Cancer?

Immunotherapy combats cancer by bolstering the immune system’s ability to identify and destroy cancer cells. It employs various strategies, such as enhancing the immune response, blocking immune checkpoints that cancer cells exploit, or directly targeting cancer cells. This approach can slow down cancer growth, prevent metastasis, and even eradicate cancer cells. The efficacy of immunotherapy lies in its ability to target cancer cells while sparing most normal cells, thereby reducing potential side effects and improving the overall effectiveness of cancer treatment.

Types of Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy for cancer includes several types, each with a unique mechanism of action. Monoclonal antibodies mimic natural antibodies to block cancer cell functions or deliver toxic substances to them. Immune checkpoint inhibitors release the brakes on the immune system, enabling a stronger attack on cancer cells. Non-specific immunotherapies, like cytokines, broadly stimulate the immune system. Oncolytic virus therapy uses modified viruses to selectively kill cancer cells. T-cell therapies modify the patient’s T-cells to better recognize and attack cancer. Cancer vaccines, both preventive and therapeutic, train the immune system to recognize and combat cancerous cells. These diverse immunotherapy approaches offer tailored treatment options based on the specific characteristics of the cancer.
