Gynecological Cancer

Gynecologic cancer encompasses cancers in a woman’s reproductive organs, including cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. Fallopian tube cancer is also included but is rare. Each type has unique symptoms, risks, and prevention strategies.

What Are Gynecological Cancer?

Gynecologic cancer refers to malignancies starting in a woman’s reproductive organs. This group includes cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar cancers, each distinct in their symptoms, risks, and prevention strategies. Rarely, gynecologic cancer also involves the fallopian tubes. These cancers originate in different regions of the pelvis. Cervical cancer begins in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus. Ovarian cancer starts in the ovaries, situated on each side of the uterus. Uterine cancer develops in the uterus, the organ where a baby grows during pregnancy. Vaginal cancer forms in the vagina, the channel leading from the uterus to the exterior. Vulvar cancer occurs in the vulva, the outer part of the female genitals. Recognizing individual symptoms and understanding risk factors are crucial for early diagnosis and successful treatment. As with many cancers, early detection generally results in more effective treatment, making awareness of symptoms and regular check-ups vital for women’s health.

What Are The Symptoms Of Gynecological Cancer?

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge
  • Feeling full quickly, difficulty eating, bloating, abdominal or back pain (ovarian cancer)
  • Pelvic pain or pressure (ovarian and uterine cancers)
  • Increased urination urgency, constipation (ovarian and vaginal cancers)
  • Itching, burning, pain, or changes in the vulva (vulvar cancer)

When to see a doctor?

If you experience unusual vaginal bleeding, especially post-menopause, or changes in menstrual patterns, schedule a consultation with Dr. Bharat. Other warning signs persisting for two weeks or more also warrant a doctor’s visit. Early detection is key, so any persistent, unusual symptoms should be evaluated for potential gynecologic cancers.
