Anemia

Anemia is a common blood disorder where the body lacks sufficient red blood cells or hemoglobin, leading to symptoms like weakness, dizziness, and shortness of breath. It affects over 1.92 billion people and varies in severity.

What is Anemia?

Anemia is a prevalent blood disorder characterized by a deficiency in the number or quality of red blood cells (RBCs) or hemoglobin, an essential component of RBCs. Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein that binds oxygen in the lungs and transports it to tissues throughout the body. Anemia arises when there aren’t enough RBCs or when hemoglobin doesn’t function properly, hindering efficient oxygen transport.

Diagnosed through blood tests indicating hemoglobin levels below 13.5 gm/dl in men or 12.0 gm/dl in women, anemia presents symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, headaches, cold extremities, and pale or yellowish skin. Various factors can contribute to anemia, including poor diet, chronic diseases (such as kidney disease or cancer), menstrual and pregnancy-related iron depletion, and certain genetic conditions.

The risk of anemia escalates with age and is more common in people with chronic illnesses or those undergoing specific treatments like chemotherapy. Anemia is not a single disease but a condition that can result from various underlying causes, each necessitating a specific treatment approach.

Symptoms of Anemia:

The common symptoms of anemia include:
Fatigue and general weakness
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Irregular heartbeat
Headaches
Cold hands and feet
Pale or yellowish skin
Shortness of breath
Chest pain
These symptoms arise because organs and tissues in the body are not receiving enough oxygen.

When to See a Doctor:

It’s important to consult a Hematologist like Dr Bharat if you experience symptoms of anemia, especially if they are persistent or severe. This is particularly crucial for individuals with a known risk of anemia, such as those with chronic diseases, a diet low in iron or vitamins, or a genetic predisposition to anemia. Early diagnosis and treatment can effectively manage anemia and prevent complications.
